In Our Opinion: Obama stayed true to core beliefs

Although he showed a willingness to go around Congress with executive orders, in his State of the Union address Tuesday night, President Barack Obama did not actually declare martial law.

That point was obviously lost on a couple of Texas Republicans.

Rep. Randy Weber, a freshman member of the House elected to Ron Paul’s old seat, didn’t bother to wait for the president to begin his speech before tweeting his sentiments.

“On floor of house waitin on “Kommandant-In-Chef”... the Socialistic dictator who’s been feeding US a line or is it “A-Lying?”

Rep. Steve Stockman, a tea party Republican who is challenging Texas Sen. John Cornyn in a GOP primary, had an aide tell the Dallas Morning News that he had walked out on Obama’s speech before its completion.

“Tonight I left early after hearing how the president is further abusing his constitutional powers,” Stockman said in a statement.

It’s pretty obvious that those two fellows were not the president’s target audience.

No, that would be the constituency that helped get him re-elected in 2012: women, Latinos and other minorities, young people, environmentalists, the lower middle class and the working poor.

“Climate change is a fact. And when our children’s children look us in the eye and ask if we did all we could to leave them a safer, more stable world, with new sources of energy, I want us to be able to say yes, we did.” Environmentalists … check.

“Finally, if we’re serious about economic growth, it is time to heed the call of business leaders, labor leaders, faith leaders, law enforcement — and fix our broken immigration system. Latinos … check.

“… this Congress needs to restore the unemployment insurance you just let expire for 1.6 million people.” Lower middle class … check.
