Consequences of gas drilling
Re: "Cooperstown _ the water board voted ... to recommend to the board of trustees that the village of Cooperstown sell 300,000 gallons of water ... for three gas exploration wells in Otsego County": the one thing left of "old" is Otsego Lake! It seems terribly short-sighted to risk it. Think of other areas in our country with horrible water shortages. For example, North Georgia wants to have a piece of Tennessee in order to have sufficient water!
Then consider if a period of drought causes the lake springs to fail. Better consider Susquehanna River tagging along from the lake. This is not "just a Cooperstown decision" to make!
How about wear and tear on the pumping facility? And the effect on our highways from the heavy truck traffic?
And no one can be assured that the type of drilling will not cause major upheavals, urging careful consideration of this action.

Community came together
A well-deserved thank you to the Oneonta Family YMCA and participating members of the city of Oneonta Fire Department for a great junior firefighter camp held earlier this month at the Sixth Ward Booster Club playground. These two organizations came together to provide an absolutely outstanding experience for the young children who participated.
The city of Oneonta showed tremendous support of our youths by sending the fire trucks to be part of this very worthwhile program. It's great to see our community working together to promote education about health and fitness as well as fire safety.
Sorry that The Daily Star missed out of such a wonderful opportunity to display these efforts in your community newspaper!

Disrespect shown in theft
On Memorial Day in Neahwa Park, someone took from my van a rifle that belongs to VFW Post 1206 and left a rusty one in its place. It is a shame that someone did not respect the property of the VFW. The person or people who took this rifle thought that a rifle in good condition was worth more to them than to the members of the VFW.
We attend the ceremonies on Memorial Day to show our appreciation for our fallen comrades. We dress in uniform and carry these rifles with dignity. The Veterans of Foreign Wars put their lives on the line for their country and deserve respect.

Don't shoot buffalo on run
There are still some buffalo on the loose in the area and they are being shot at. I think this is wrong. They have a right to live in this world, too. The people who had them should not have gotten them.
One was shot just down the road from where I live. They should be able to live out their lives just like we do. There are three babies in the herd that I saw the other day.
I hope that there is someone out there who will do the right thing to help the buffalo.
