I am writing as an ex-employee of Countryside Care in Delhi. I only worked part-time but it was over a long enough period to observe how things were being done there.
Prior to privatizing to Leatherstocking, I was impressed by the excellent care given to the residents. I observed a majority of considerate and affable staff showing kindness, competence and care. I am a pharmacist and worked with a longtime and very competent professional, Linda Jankowski. Often she would “go the extra mile” without hesitation.
Subsequent to her leaving the area, she was replaced by another full-time pharmacist, Bob Pavelka. He is very knowledgeable and specially trained in geriatric medication, dosing and potential medication conflicts. He regularly made rounds checking each patient’s chart and discussing any questions with the prescribing physicians. This was an extremely valuable contribution to patient care and safety and was greatly appreciated by the nursing staff and the physicians.
Shortly after privatization, Mr. Pavelka was let go and replaced by an outsourced pharmacist from outside our area. I believe he came in one day a week and could not nearly do the job done before. I see it as an example of cost-cutting replacing top-notch and first-rate care.
Romney and Ryan, if elected, are almost certain to follow a similar path. They advocate cutting Medicare and Medicaid funding, privatizing healthcare costs and will more than likely follow that which contributed significantly to Countryside’s downfall.
If you think the good seniors of our area, who have paid their taxes and contributed to our region, are deserving of less than excellent care in their final years, think carefully, hard and long, and go ahead and vote your thinking. Think hard, but please do vote!
