Outreach, not legislation, will stop massacres
A brief history of Eric and Dylan, who committed the Columbine massacre, shows that they were both violent with mental problems and had criminal backgrounds. They had been seen giving Heil Hitler salutes to each other in school, made prejudiced comments using Darwinian evolution theory terminology and even made a video for a high school class that portrayed themselves as hit men, shooting students and using profane language.
Since they were underage, they asked an older female student to make a straw purchase of two .12 gauge shotguns and a Hi-Point carbine. After illegally obtaining the shotguns, they sawed them off, which was a felony. They also purchased a TEC-DC9 semi-automatic handgun from a firearms dealer who in violation of federal law did not check ID or keep records of the sale. The boys also made bombs that miraculously did not go off!
The boys violated 18 gun laws then and more have been put in place since then. However, we are not any safer!
How can our children be safer in school? Mental health issues must be dealt with. These people can’t be allowed to come and go as they please; they need help.
Bring in or back firearms and conservation education to the students and stamp out the ignorance and media hype surrounding guns. Hire an armed, well-trained officer for each school because the only way to stop a gunman in our school is by another gunman. Also educate the staff on what to watch for in the students and on what to do if it ever happened at our school. Encourage faith-based organizations, to come into the schools, because life is difficult but is very precious and each of us is eternally responsible for his or her own actions.
God bless America; one nation under God.
