In Your Opinion: Washington's 'Farewell Address' worth reading

--
The Daily Star

---- — Thank you for your recent discussion on how the first president would view today what is going on.

Unfortunately, you forgot to mention the president’s personal response titled “Friends and Fellow-Citizens” as he delivered it in his “Farewell Address” as published in newspapers in September 1796. This was also known as “warnings of a departing friend.”

This address was brought back to importance by Abraham Lincoln on Feb. 22, 1862, when he recommended its public readings. Since then, the address has been read annually to members of the U.S. Senate. The same practice remained in the U.S. House of Representative until 1984.

The address is accessible on the Internet by typing Washington’s Farewell Address. It was originally written in old English style, but the message still applies to the problems and questions challenging our nation, our Constitution and our unique form of government.
