The Daily Star
---- — While the elections are eight months away, I feel strongly about the choices we will have in the four most visible races.
Andrew Cuomo should be re-elected governor. While his initiatives of lowering taxes and consolidating local governments present difficulties to municipalities such as Oneonta in the short term, they will greatly benefit those who follow us. So too will his unprecedented commitment to the upstate economy. Additionally, he has created a much more functional atmosphere with the Legislature.
Chris Gibson has earned re-election. I easily align myself with moderates of both parties and Chris’ balanced voice in what surely will be a Republican Congress is an important offset to extremism. Further, he has been more visible in Oneonta than his predecessors and has been extremely responsive when we have needed his support. He has served our country, and the sincerity of his interest in the economy of our region makes him an easy choice. We are lucky to have him.
Seniority and being in the majority party of each house of the state Legislature are important criteria for an elected official’s effective service. Assemblyman Bill Magee and Sen. Jim Seward meet those standards.
In addition to being highly approachable with a frequent presence in Otsego County, and demonstrating outstanding leadership on agriculture issues, Assemblyman Magee strongly advocates for education and small business, making it easy to support his re-election.
With his principal office in Oneonta, Jim Seward is readily available to help the city deal with issues in Albany. Most important, he took the leadership role in bringing the region together on a new and more aggressive approach to economic development. No one else has Jim’s longstanding credibility. He has used his recognized leadership position well and we all will benefit from his re-election.
