In Your Opinion: Column on fashion struck a chord

I have just finished reading Emily Popek’s commentary, “In defense of ‘ladies wearing pretty dresses,’” and feel the need to respond. I too, as Ms. Popek, have been fascinated by fashion from the time I was a young girl. Early pictures show me as young as 5 or 6 years of age, carrying purses, wearing hats, and yes, wearing “pretty dresses.” I remember fondly my selecting fabrics for new outfits my mother would painstakingly produce from her Singer sewing machine.

I too, thought I might pursue a career in fashion since it was also an avenue for me to express my creativity. I tried drawing and painting, and like Ms. Popek, my art never lived up to what I envisioned. So for years I have “hidden” from many my appreciation of fashion. I felt most would consider this interest to be trivial and worst yet, for me to be considered as superficial. I wanted to be taken seriously, so at times, I suppressed my interest in fashion and pretended that fashion did not matter.

But it does matter. And as Ms. Popek so eloquently states, fashion may not be “important,” but, “fashion gives me a way to express myself.” And like Ms. Popek, “I will not pretend that I don’t derive creative satisfaction from putting together a knockout outfit.” Ms. Popek, thank you for expressing the same attitudes I possess regarding fashion. I too, will proudly proclaim, without shame, I love fashion. On a final note, Ms. Popek, don’t you just love the new color trends for this spring?
