It's not the same Republican Party

It’s not the same Republican Party

For some time I have wondered why it has been so difficult for Democrats and Republicans to reach compromise. I am starting to believe that whereas the Democratic Party has not fundamentally changed that much over the years, the Republican party may be a slightly different story. The GOP doesn’t seem like the same party your grandparents used to know.

Welcome in yet again the Patriot Movement, with its John Birch Society, Tea Party, Sovereign Citizens, Constitution Party, Libertarian Party and religious right. Given a black second-term president, health care proposals, same-sex marriage legislation, attempted immigration reform and its own dismissal for gun control initiatives, the patriot movement seems to churn within the Republican Party.

Reading between the lines of completely baseless paranoid conspiracy theory, the Republican right may be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Mitt Romney himself raised a few eyebrows during the 2012 campaign when he said Russia — not Iran, not North Korea — was without question, America’s No. 1 geopolitical danger. Anxiety about Russia, straight out of the John Birch Society playbook of fear. This resurgence of distortion coming from within the Republican Party has, in my view, helped create some of the roadblocks preventing actionable government policy that now exists.

If one were to fact check this influence within the GOP, then the absence of functional government may be better understood. Think about it. Check it out.
