Recently, we have seen vandalism of trees planted in the city. While I never support vandalism, one must ask if the misguided program has left residents disgruntled.
The city just planted a new soft maple tree in between my sidewalk and curb, right next to the stump of the tree cut down last year that I have been told repeatedly will be removed. Not to mention the soft maple, which according to the Environmental Committee Report cost at least $500, and was already split and rotting before being planted.
My tree is a blessing, however. My neighbors have a fresh, new crab apple tree. A crabapple tree over the sidewalk? I am all for city beautification, but one has to recognize the frustrations of people when the city has failed to honor its commitments to previous trees and forged ahead with new. All while failing to consider the future of the trees and safety of pedestrians.
