Pinkey can't imagine a sustainable future

I am so tired of reading fairy tales like Chuck Pinkey’s rosy picture of happy Pennsylvanians who are delighted about fracking. Shazam!

Mr. Pinkey, your comparison of yourself to Gomer Pyle is very apt — like Gomer, you are gullible if you believe that anyone but a select few large landowners would be able to make a long-term, sustainable living from natural gas in upstate New York. And where will the rest of us be when the drillers are gone, the large landowners have cashed their last checks, and we are left to clean up the mess of poisoned water, land and air? Will it even be possible to clean up? The evidence, which is quite clear to see if you don’t have dollar signs blinding you, says no.

Your statement that gas exploration is “the only industry that will bring prosperity to upstate New York” shows a gross lack of imagination. This area needs money, yes. But we need new business to benefit all of us in perpetuity and not just a select few for the short term. We need new business that is going to leave the environment in good condition for our children and grandchildren. We need new business that uses and enhances such natural resources as our hardworking people, clean water, fertile soil and beautiful landscapes. Fracking and pipelines are not that new business.

The upcoming election offers a choice between people who have the vision to promote such new business — people like John Kosmer, Beth Rosenthal and the other Sustainable Otsego candidates — and people like Pinkey and his candidates who can’t see the great potential in this region and its sustainable resources and are willing to offer it up to the gas companies for a quick buck. My vote is for sustainability.
