Act now to restore Voting Rights Act

Earlier this summer, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a key part of the Voting Rights Act, known as Section 4. The damage to the VRA can and must be fixed — Congress has the power to act swiftly to restore the effectiveness of the Voting Rights Act. Before adjourning for the August recess, both the Senate and the House of Representatives held hearings to begin discussing solutions to discrimination at the polls and the path forward for the VRA. We were encouraged by what we witnessed — members from both sides of the aisle expressing a need to address the Supreme Court’s mistake and vowing to ensure our elections are free, fair and accessible to all citizens.

The anti-voter laws that are cropping up around the country in the wake of the Supreme Court decision will negatively impact all voters — young and old, rich and poor alike. Now is a critical time to do all we can for voters. As members of the LWV of the Oneonta Area, we are working to make our democracy strong through voter registration drives and educational forums. Voter registration and election information can be found at www.lwvoneonta.org.

Our foremothers and forefathers understood that voting provides citizens the ability to have an impact on the critical issues facing their communities. Contact your congressional representatives and thank them for starting the process to fix the VRA and strongly encourage them to repair and restore it quickly.
