In Your Opinion: Bring on the socialism

--
The Daily Star

---- — I was elated to read the headline above the March 26 letter of Mary Bordinger: “America becoming a socialist state.” “Well,” I said to my better-half, “it’s about time. Now we’ll have single-payer health insurance, low-cost housing, investment in mass transit and education. There’ll be more economic equality. We’ll be just like those Scandinavian countries that have socialist or labor governments.”

However, my heart dropped when I saw that Ms. Bordinger wasn’t enthusiastic about the change. In fact, she sees only danger and tyranny in such a move. I asked my mate, “Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland — are they tyrannies and police states? Their people who live better, longer and are healthier and better educated, do they walk around in fear and trembling?”

“No,” she replied, “they seem quite content.”

“And Saul Alinsky, didn’t he help the East Brooklyn churches to organize and to get better housing in Brownsville and East New York? They thought that he was a saint. Ms. Bordinger seems to feel differently.”

“She may be listening to those radio programs — you know, the Bloviators. For every silver cloud, they can find a dark lining.”

So, it looks like we’ll be staying with the same old, same old, where the rich get rich and the poor get poorer, where housing is plentiful if you have a million or so, where health care is patchy, expensive and relies on the mercies of the insurance companies. We’ll continue to be exploited by petroleum and power companies. Socialism will still be considered a four-letter word. The free market will remain our god and we’ll continue to blame the nation’s problems on the liberals. So sad, so sad.
