Bullying isn't just kids' stuff

I was moved and inspired by Emily Popek’s column, “Memories of an angry young man,” in The Daily Star on Feb. 2, especially with the idea that it isn’t just their peers that can pose a threat to children, but that adult authority figures like teachers, policemen and parents can bully as well.

A child who is consistently bombarded with demeaning remarks by adults is just as bullied as one who is tripped and jeered between classes at school by classmates. As one who volunteers in my school to work with second graders and with the kindergarten in the computer lab, at my church after-school program and who mediates with parents who have split up for custody and visitation, I was inspired to make extra sure that my remarks to the children I meet are positive and supportive.

Life is uncertain enough for children, and I hope, as you do, “that somehow, even amid an era of drastic budget cuts, our schools can find creative ways to be havens rather than hostile environments for all students.”

Thanks for the reminder, Emily.
