---- — The Department of Environmental Conservation is, at this time, considering comments from the public concerning the possible use of fracking by the oil and gas industry. As an opponent of this risky procedure, for many reasons, I urge all persons to voice their concerns to the DEC at (518) 402-8000 asap, and to Gov. Cuomo at (518) 474-8390, to let them know the majority of us feel the risks involved do not offset the supposed gains.
X.Y.S. has over 450 vineyards, hundreds of orchards, dairies (some organic), microbreweries and award-winning wineries and yogurt plants with plans to build more, all which depend on clean water for their existence. Tourism has boosted many local economies, but who would want to come here and fight the truck traffic and air pollution that fracking would bring?
The established businesses we have are sustainable, and employ many people now, and will do so as in the future, whereas the gas industry, by it’s very nature, is a boom and bust venture. If the oil and gas companies win, we will lose much more than we gain.
