The Daily Star
---- — This drilling and pipeline could be stopped, as well as all excessive spending curtailed. Focus on your county’s annual public hearing on the budget.
Federal, state and industry might say gas, but county boards have the power to prevent it. Daily life is all actions occasioned by the annual budget. Marriage licenses can be issued, right-of-ways built, Medicaid benefits paid to providers — who work the phrase, “to you, this device is absolutely free.”
Local leaders are empowered to halt the money train through all levels of government, because the actual act of spending falls on local approval. Continual approval of ever-higher budgets proportionately approves hiring more people at state and federal levels, who enact more inane mandates they pass down, requiring more taxes from all.
Local government, seeing to itself, regularly buys one of each from the entire wish book. Our national cash demise shows no sign of stopping at annual county budget public hearings. Legislators in Otsego County and supervisors in Delaware would keep things that way, too, while they strategize extracting $10 billion budgets from taxpayers, then each November, quickly, silently, unopposed, stroke “OK” to their own bidding.
Delaware County will start today by asking about the tax cap. Speak simply, at 12:45, saying “I oppose overriding the mandated tax cap,” then at 12:50, “I oppose these raises” (proposed $1,000 raises to 15 department heads). No one speaking cues the board to approve its own proposals at the 1 p.m. regular board meeting.
Never the source of growth, only the manner to levy residents more and more to cover the increases, is ever addressed. The county budget includes so incomprehensibly much in support of its insatiable self. Urging change is publicly packing the chamber past functioning, like the squished fans at an England soccer game.
