Tax-break system makes little sense

The Daily Star

---- — This letter is in response to the Aug. 30, article titled, “IRS: Same-sex marriages will get equal treatment.”

I’d like to offer a different viewpoint concerning “equal treatment” tax breaks for same-sex or heterosexual married couples. I do not understand why any married couples should get a tax break compared to single taxpayers. What does sex or living arrangements have to do with property taxes, heating and utility bills, car insurance, school taxes, etc.?  I thought tax breaks were for married couples because of children. Same-sex couples cannot produce children, so why the tax break?

I, on the other hand, now have an adult offspring and am widowed. Regardless of the number of people in a household, the basic expenditures still exist. Shame on us for living this unorthodox lifestyle! It’s OK to be married or collecting public assistance, but, hey, a widowed mom with an adult son should be penalized in this great United States. We both are getting taxed to death. I just can’t figure it out. By the way, working two jobs leaves little time for sex or money for pleasure!
