Check out facts on Newman project

Check out the website for actual facts on this project that Newman Development and The Daily Star are leaving out, such as even with the recent fire damage on campus, there are no tripled-up dorm rooms and there are actually vacancies! (This information has been validated by the college president.)

The Daily Star feels that the concern about rents leaving the area is not valid since some owners of rental properties do not live here. In that case, that would make Newman Development the largest out-of-town landlord in Oneonta! The Daily Star also forgot to mention that Newman Development is looking for a multi-year tax abatement, so not only will this project take much-needed money away from downtown businesses (who advertise in The Daily Star), it will provide no significant tax revenue for the city.

The Daily Star’s comment about the project opening up housing for non-students is also not valid.

Currently, there are approximately 30 properties for sale in the Oneonta school district under 125K, and an additional 40 properties from 125K to 200K. First-time buyer programs and low mortgage rates could make buying these homes cheaper than renting.

There are also approximately 75 to 100 abandoned properties in the city. Why is there no rush to convert these abandoned homes to apartments for non-student renters?

The reason is that there are not enough jobs to draw people here.

Instead of looking for ways to take much-needed student income out of the downtown, why does the community not look for ways to get non-students to stay?

Offer a tax abatement to a company that will bring jobs to this area, not to a company that will take money away from our local residents and community.
