A different view of the TV debates

The Daily Star

---- — A different view

of the TV debates

The other day I decided to make time to watch the recent TV debates. I had recorded them earlier and thought now would be a good time to finally see what the hullabaloo was all about.

Long ago I had hung a large mirror on the wall in front of my desk so I could work at my computer and still watch my favorite programs on the TV in the living room — an old habit I picked up in college.

So there I was, with Ask Jeeves beckoning to me on my computer, a cup of coffee at my lips and my eyes focused on the TV in the oval mirror on the wall ... when ...

All of a sudden my computer made a loud hissing sound and expired. A second later the TV in the mirror flickered off and on a few times and then, with a poof of grey smoke, the screen changed to black and white.

Everything else in the mirror was still in color!

I was afraid to turn around. Frozen in my chair, with both eyes now glued to the mirror, a large hexagon steel cage suddenly appeared on the screen. As the image panned out I could see that the cage was in the middle of a giant indoor arena. Two combatants were doing battle inside the cage. They were dressed like gladiators. The place was packed with screaming, frothing at the mouth zombies. I could hear their blood curdling screeches bouncing off the walls of the living room behind me.  Along the bottom of the screen there were two brown rattle snakes wiggling and humping along a slow moving ticker tape, each snake leaving a slimy trail that, like a hospital heartbeat monitor, recorded each and every blow that drew blood.

Trick or treat?

Gibson’s policies are bad for the country

I strongly urge voters to elect Julian Schreibman as New York’s 19th District representative to Congress.

Chris Gibson rode the Tea Party wave to become our congressman in 2010. Although he claims to be bipartisan, he has voted more than 90 percent of the time with the Republican majority — a majority so invested in “making Obama a one-term president” that it spent two years doing absolutely nothing.

Not only does Rep. Gibson oppose a woman’s right to choose; he also wants to defund Planned Parenthood, which would deprive thousands of women of basic health care, and would cause a rise in teen pregnancy, which we cannot afford as a district or as a nation.

Mr. Gibson is a climate change denier who cares more about oil industry profits than about the health of our children and grandchildren. His voting record on environmental issues is 17 percent, and he wants to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency, giving corporations free rein to pollute our air and water. He and his party talk about “job-killing regulations.” What about health-destroying pollution?

Chris Gibson signed Grover Norquist’s “no tax” pledge, mindlessly asserting that all of the nation’s financial problems can be solved only by cutting programs. We need a representative whose loyalty is to the people, not to Grover Norquist. Julian Schreibman sensibly believes that we need to look at both the spending and revenue sides of our budget problems, eliminating waste wherever it exists and increasing revenues from those who have benefitted most.

Julian Schreibman has a strong background as a prosecuter who helped bring al-Qaida criminals to justice. He wants to save Medicare, not turn it into voucher care. He knows that caring for our children and teenagers today will mean more productive citizens tomorrow.

Russo is asset

to Otsego

I have known Paul Russo since he and his family moved to the area in 1999. Paul is an optometrist at Bassett Healthcare, and has used his skills and talents while being deployed as an active member of the National Guard.

I believe he will be an asset to the people of the town of Otsego by both exercising fiscal responsibility and tackling important issues using measured reasoning, rather than emotionally responding to matters that may come before the board.

Paul has made many contributions to his community in many ways. I urge everyone in the town of Otsego to vote for Paul Russo for town councilman on Election Day.
