---- — James Groves’ smile warmed the soul
On March 16, the world got a little colder and darker. You wouldn’t have noticed it, because you weren’t lucky enough to know my nephew, James Edison Groves III. His smile warmed your soul and lit up the area. He died in Afghanistan in a helicopter crash that day. James made rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 and was the pilot of a Bell OH-58 Kiowa.
James was a wonderful person with a great personality. He had an acute sense of humor and always made me laugh. That’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of him. He always made you feel at ease, even if you just met him.
He was only 37 years old and had a loving wife, Katie, and two sons, James and Shane. This was his fourth deployment, two in Iraq and this was his second in Afghanistan. He felt very deeply for God, family and country.
It’s been a better world because of him and he will be missed. His grandparents predeceased him, and were James and Vera Groves from Oneonta. James and Leslie, his parents, and his sister, Jeannette live in Ohio. His great aunt Mary resides in Colorado. An aunt ,
Kathy lives in Syracuse, and I’m another aunt, Penny from Oneonta.
Services are pending at Arlington National Cemetery.
