Clean water is a bipartisan issue

I am responding to Ms. Kathryn Kurtz and Ms. Anna Marie Lusins’ letters (The Daily Star, July 23). Not young enough to be hippies, but old enough to disagree politically, my husband and I have come to the educated and researched conclusion that the process of horizontal hydraulic fracturing is a bipartisan issue: Everyone needs clean water to survive.

It’s a bit more complicated than the “safe, clean process of pumping a mixture of sand and fluid ... into shale” to release natural gas.

Not “junk science,” but facts: 1) It’s silica sand and toxic chemicals mixed with at least 1 million gallons of clean water per well. 2) Twenty to 40 percent comes back up as “flowback” and is now radioactive toxic waste. 3) There is no known technology to make toxic waste drinkable water. 4) It is now equivalent to the nuclear energy’s radioactive waste and a big storage problem because it’s not from one or two wells, but hundreds. 5) If your drinking water comes from an aquifer, reservoir or well, in the way of upward migration ...

I could go on, but space is limited. I recommend reading Chapters 8, 9 and 10 of “The Fine Print” by David Cay Johnson, concerning pipelines and taxes.

We need to stop viewing those bucolic scenes on TV that advertisers were paid to create to get us to think this pipeline and drilling method are environmentally safe. We need to convey this information to Albany. Knock the dollar signs out of the eyes of some of our politicians and those who have no clue or concern for the health and safety of themselves or their neighbors. Look beyond the boom-and-bust of the nonrenewable gas and oil industry. The bipartisan issue is keeping our water safe, clean and drinkable.
