Reps must explore all options for Manor

Our county reps have finally decided to meet with the people they represent regarding the Manor issue.

Will they be explaining why they decided to sell the Manor without hearing the people first?

Are they really willing to explore ways to keep a quality health care facility available to county residents? Past experience would tell us no.

Raising sales taxes in Otsego County may seem ominous, but Otsego County has among the lowest sales tax compared to surrounding counties. Oneida County has an 8.75 percent sales tax.

Eventually, our sales tax will surely go up, but sadly not in time to save the Manor.

During a recent presentation in Cooperstown, when questioned about how much real estate taxes would need to be raised to support the Manor, county Treasurer Dan Crowell answered “about $75 per $100,000 of home value.” Residents whose homes are valued less would pay less, and those with higher home values may be willing to pay a little more to save the Manor.

There may be other additional ways to support the Manor:

Could Friends of the Manor sponsor annual fundraisers? Bassett does it successfully.

Can we expand the volunteer services?

Can we offer services at the Manor that bring higher Medicare and Medicaid re-imbursement?

What about a partnership with Bassett Healthcare?

Are we not our brothers’ keeper? Will you not want quality health care for your mom or dad, perhaps yourself if needed in the future?

Care of the elderly is expensive, but we can’t sweep this responsibility under the rug. We have a moral obligation to care for our elderly and infirm.

Folks, don’t be apathetic on this issue.

Let your county rep know how you feel. Support the Manor! We cannot give up!
