Adopt a shelter dog or cat

---- — Adopt a shelter dog or cat

Take a visit to your nearest animal shelter. In many shelters, you will notice that nearly every cage is occupied. Approximately 5 million to 7 million animals are brought into shelters in the United States each year. Out of those animals, 3 million to 4 million of them will be euthanized due to lack of space.

The United States, not to mention most other countries, is overrun with animals. Dogs and cats are popular house pets, so it is no wonder why there are so many of these animals in houses, but also in shelters.

Instead of adopting an animal from a shelter, some people opt to buy from pet shops or breeders. Around 20 to 30 percent of animals are adopted from animal shelters and 26 percent of dogs are purchased from breeders. The purchasing of animals instead of being adopted from a shelter is causing the overpopulation of animals in the United States. This is due to more animals being born to fill the demand of pet stores and owners. It is estimated that 2 to 10 percent of cats and dogs are bought from pet shops.

The animals from pet stores often come from kitten or puppy mills. A mill is a breeding operation that breeds animals purely for profit. Since this is the case, the conditions that the animals commonly live in are filthy or hazardous. The animals live in small cages and are not cared for properly, resulting in animals with serious health conditions.

If you are thinking of purchasing a dog or cat from a pet store, save an animal’s life instead and adopt from an animal shelter, it will make room for more animals as well as give an animal another chance for a family and love.
