Marijuana should be legalized for recreational use in New York state. If New York legalized marijuana, there would be many different benefits for the whole state. New York would be able to tax it very heavily, which would help boost the local economies and the state as a whole.
Crime rates would go drastically down, reducing the amount of people ending up in jail over a small possession charge. This would also save more money by not having to pay to keep them in jail. New York could be the next step in ending the prohibition of marijuana for most of the country.
Marijuana could also be a huge benefactor in the medical industries. So far, 18 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medicinal marijuana, and two states, Colorado and Washington, have completely legalized marijuana for recreational use. Medicinal marijuana is approved to help with Parkinson’s disease, glaucoma, insomnia and many more sicknesses people suffer from every day, when there is no need to suffer.
New York should step up in marijuana reform and lead the country with common sense to legalize a drug with so many proven benefits.
