Only the weak fear gun ownership
While my wife and I are vacationing in your city (Oneonta) and exploring the surrounds, I picked up a copy of The Daily Star. I am responding to Mr. Zuefle’s comments on ‘More guns means more shootings” (12 June issue).
Mr. Zuefle may scan the news for gun tragedies, but I suspect that he fails to note the dozens or even scores of incidences where an armed person thwarted a crime, robbery, rape etc. Admittedly, people do stupid things, like allowing a 4-year-old child to play with a loaded gun. When people do stupid things, problems often result; that does not mean that the whole concept of individual gun ownership is bad and should be shut down.
Mr. Zuefle also characterizes Wayne LaPierre as a gun extremist. On the contrary, Mr. LaPierre is a reasonable man with reasonable solutions in an uncertain world. I think that Mr. Zuefle does not understand that in this life, there are no guarantees and he (Mr. Zuefle.) wants the ‘utopian ideal.”
Further, gun control is NOT about guns but it IS about control. In my opinion, only weak people want controls and guarantees. Freedom and liberties have risks and the strong are willing to take them.
