The Daily Star
---- — Last Friday’s headline article “Census: Schoharie had steepest drop” and the headline article of the Weekend Edition “Schoharie, Otsego vie for brewery” taken together tell an even bigger story. Schoharie lost residents according to the census before the flood, and we lost many more homes and businesses because of the flood.
Yet, it has been a battle to convince some members of the Board of Supervisors and the treasurer, Mr. Cherry, that we cannot afford to bring back all of the employees that were laid off after the flood. Schoharie County needs to carefully control public jobs paid for by the taxpayer and, most importantly, we need to put on a full-court press to attract businesses and the jobs they bring.
The Weekend’s article by Joe Mahoney, who was at our board meeting, correctly reported the uncalled-for confrontational questioning of Mr. Lawrence, executive of the brewing company, by some board members and Mr. Cherry. I want to make it very clear that I and other supervisors appreciate Mr. Lawrence’s interest in Schoharie County and will work with and support him in every way possible. We hope Long House Brewing can find a way to expand its successful business to our county and bring desperately needed jobs to our residents.
