Ideally — but our lawmakers will never vote for it — there should be no contributions to those seeking election, nor should individuals be allowed to use their own funds. Ideally, every viable candidate who can collect enough signatures should receive X dollars to spend on his or her campaign — not a penny more. If the pig farmer from New Jersey collects enough signatures, he too is entitled to government campaign money. Fair and equal — but we know it ain’t going to happen.
