At this time in modern history when many European socialist nations are striving to wean themselves from the trappings of socialism, we have a gentleman in Delhi who advocates and proclaims that we in America should “bring on socialism.” Let us first examine that which he so ardently celebrates.
Simply stated, socialism is a political ideology that seeks to achieve “equality of OUTCOME” as opposed to capitalism’s ideology of achieving “equality of OPPORTUNITY.” For the ideology of socialism to be fully realized, the wealth of any nation must be “redistributed” so that all have a more-equitable piece of the overall pie.
Socialists look to government as the vehicle to achieve the desired redistribution (via taxation policies, etc.). This is how the inherent “thievery” is eventually implemented.
If you were walking down a street and a thief stole your wallet, you would be outraged, to say the least. Curiously, however, this outrage is somehow legitimized when a legal entity (i.e. government) achieves the same result (i.e. a redistribution of your wealth to someone else who has not earned it) via abhorrent government policies. That is the direction in which the current administration of this nation is taking its citizens.
History has long since served to illustrate what socialism really means. It is a dispiriting ideology that gradually dismantles and eventually removes all incentive for the creation of individual prosperity.
Mary Bordinger of West Oneonta in her “America Becoming a Socialist State” letter to the editor (Daily Star of March 26) gets it exactly right. Let us all strive to re-educate ourselves before jumping on the bandwagon of socialism.
