In Your Opinion: Eldridge has no qualifications

The Daily Star

---- — I am responding to Jim O’Leary’s letter on April 8 in which he claims that Congressman Chris Gibson is not a moderate, and cites examples of his voting record in Congress to provide his point. He implies that Sean Eldridge is a better choice to represent the 19th Congressional District.

I would discuss Mr. Eldridge’s qualifications, if I could find any. Military experience? None. Political experience? A brief mention on his campaign website of his political activism, but no details. Business experience? Easy to tout if one’s husband has millions of dollars to bankroll a start-up.

Mr. Eldridge is a carpetbagger who moved into the 19th District for the express purpose of running against Congressman Gibson. In 2012, he and his husband moved to Garrison, in the 18th district, from SoHo, and Mr. Eldridge was quoted in the New York Times as putting down roots in that community.

Less than a year later, they moved to Shokan in the 19th district, where Mr. Eldridge declared his candidacy for Congress last year. So much for those roots.

Congressman Gibson is a native of this district, graduated from a high school in this district, spent a career in the Army and returned home to represent this district.

Congressman Gibson has voted a number of times contrary to the way I would have preferred he voted. But he is also very independent. He voted against reauthorization of the Patriot Act long before the NSA activities became public. He gives back his military pension while serving in Congress.

Being a political independent, I consider him very moderate.

If you want someone with no real experience, no real connection to upstate New York, someone who owns three multimillion-dollar homes, please vote for Mr. Eldridge in November.
