In Your Opinion: Vote 'yes' for libraries on May 20

On May 20, voters in the Cooperstown School District who vote on the school budget will have an opportunity to also vote on budgets for the Kinney Memorial Library in Hartwick and the Village Library of Cooperstown. Approval of those budgets will provide equitable, long-term funding for these libraries that remain essential assets in our area. I write to urge a favorable vote.

Libraries have not lost their importance in the age of cyberspace because, in addition to their traditional services, they provide access to the Internet, computer stations, the ability to download books, books on tape, and other modern media. Equally important, libraries continue to be places where the community meets and interacts for a variety of activities.

Approval of the library budgets will not change how our libraries are organized or managed. The only change will be how they are funded. A yes vote will result in stable funding for the Hartwick and Village libraries. Any increase in the library budgets will require voter approval.

Please vote YES on May 20!

Lang Keith

Keith is the immediate past president of Friends of the Village Library of Cooperstown.
