In Your Opinion: Evolution, creation can co-exist

The article “Creation debate brought back memories” (Feb. 15 Daily Star) discussed the debate between Bill “The Science Guy” Nye and creationist Ken Ham. Both represented polarized views of the faith-science debate.

It seems that each side excludes information available and then forms an opinion without considering all the information available. Ken Ham says that “historical science” is not reliable. Emily Popek says “it is not scientifically accurate to ascribe agency to the evolutionary process.” If God has revealed reliable information in the Bible and if He created the universe, then nature should agree with the Bible, which seems to be true.

Science tells us that the universe began with a “Big Bang” approximately 13.7 billion yaers ago. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The sequence of events in Genesis 1 agrees with what we know about the formation of Earth’s environment. For further discussion on the accuracy of Genesis, go to, or the book “Navigating Genesis” by Hugh Ross.

It is obvious we cannot know everything, but both science and the Bible ask us to test the information we do have available. Dr. Hugh Ross and colleagues have a list of 402 characteristics that require fine-tuning for intelligent physical life to exist. A recent scientific discovery, the dark energy density, suggests exquisite one part in 10 to the 120 fine-tuning. Considering the probability of fine-tuning of the dark energy density alone, it seems unscientific to suggest that life in the universe is a product of chance.

We all need to continue to test the various models we believe in. It is encouraging to me that when nature and the Bible are honestly and objectively compared they are amazingly similar.
