In Your Opinion: Pets shouldn't be placed with smokers

The Daily Star

---- — In regard to Reuben James, the little dog that was found abandoned in a garbage pail last winter in Toddsville, I can’t help but wonder what the criteria for adopting that poor little dog was.

Did anyone bother to ask the new owners if they have a smoke-free home? It’s a fact that animals suffer from secondhand smoke just like people and children do.

In cats it usually starts as a lump under the tongue or an abscess.

After all Reuben James has been through, you owed it to him to insist on non-smokers to be his adoptive parents.

In fact, it would be a good idea if no smokers were allowed to adopt animals. And, it’s not hard to tell a smoker from a non-smoker. Just look for the puffy eyelids, premature wrinkles and the dried-out look they have, especially in the hair.
