Mr. Shepard’s article about “Getting to Know More About Medicare Eligibility” published in The Daily Star omitted some very important information. Mr. Shepard neglected to mention — when someone uses the General Enrollment period running from Jan. 1 to March 31 — that the actual date that Medicare benefits can commence is July 31.
Mr. Shepard also did not address the issues around disenrolling from an employer’s group health plan and enrolling in Medicare. In this situation, an employee who, let’s say, retires at age 68, usually can enroll in Medicare without penalty, provided the group coverage remained in effect through the retirement date.
