As we enter the holiday season, it is heartening that so many Americans give some consideration to the less-fortunate. However, it IS that time of year again, when harsh, clanging bells assault us as we enter and exit the Southside Mall. This holiday season. I urge you to find other ways to give to others. Don’t give anything to the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army has long actively discriminated against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and few people I know would willingly put their money toward such a group. The Salvation Army urges members of the LGBT community to be celibate, lobbies on behalf of anti-marriage equality bills, and denies services to members of the LGBT community. Yes, the money you put in the red pots funds these things.
Instead, participate in a toy drive or spend a weekend morning in a soup kitchen. Give money instead to groups like Goodwill, Doctors Without Borders or The Red Cross. When you see Salvation Army bell-ringers, give them nothing more than a smile.
