Other cancer research deserves support

Other cancer research deserves support

As I relax on a Sunday afternoon, I glance up at the NFL players on TV wearing pink socks, pink shoes and pink helmet ribbons, and I am compelled to write this letter.

While I get that the wearing of pink represents the NFL’s commitment to breast cancer awareness and the 39,000 lives that will be lost this year, I am reminded that there are many other cancers from which women die every year. Will the NFL or another sport be wearing white ribbons in November? After all, lung cancer will kill 72,000 women this year. Or will they wear purple for the 15,000 who will die from pancreatic cancer? In March, who will wear blue for colon cancer, which will kill 25,000 women? Who will wear orange in September for the 10,000 women who will die from leukemia, or light green for the 9,100 who will die from lymphoma? And I dare The Daily Star to print a teal edition in September in honor of those women who will die from ovarian cancer — 15,500 or more.

It’s time to start bringing awareness, support and funding to all cancers so that great strides can be made for all people suffering from this dreadful disease. Wearing or buying a product is a great way to show support for a cause, but be sure that the funds are actually going for cancer research and not just to companies that profit from your purchase. If you aren’t sure, donate to research hospitals such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering or Dana-Farber. Let’s work together to bring awareness and funding to all cancers.

I write this in memory of my daughter, Michelle Cassidy MacNaught, who died in 2011, at the age of 21, from ovarian cancer.
