Is Sustainable Otsego against fracking, or is it against natural gas? I ask because I noted in the article about “Bassett considering converting to natural gas,” that the hospital’s current heating source is oil, though it doesn’t indicate the source of the oil.
The oil disaster that was just in the news — the tragedy that occurred in Lac Mégantic, Quebec (www.planetizen.com/node/64033) last month, claiming 47 residents, was the result of the derailment of a 72-car oil unit train that carried oil obtained from fracking in North Dakota.
Heating oil is by no means a “clean” energy source — natural gas is many times cleaner in terms of emission released. I would think that from a public health perspective, the citizens of Cooperstown would demand a cleaner heating source — particularly from a hospital.
