Clerks are just doing their jobs

Mr. Pinkey, I have resisted any urge to write in about your hateful attitudes — until now. Tuesday, Aug. 13, you crossed the line.

The hard-working, low-wage-earning people who serve you at gas stations and convenience stores aren’t out to ruin your day. They are just trying to keep their jobs when they ask that you follow the same rules everyone else has to. Businesses must, by law, enforce strict regulations concerning the sale of alcohol and tobacco products — without exception. They expect their employees to do the same. In case you are unaware, “sting operations” are used to make sure no employee breaks these rules. To do so can result in immediate termination.

I’m sure that the poor girl you labeled a “genetic defect” did not enjoy making a vile-tempered old man walk a few extra steps to retrieve an I.D. he should have been carrying in the first place. As for the line of customers forming behind you, the blame falls on YOU, not her; if you had acted your age instead of your shoe size and not wasted everyone’s time harassing the young lady, the line would have kept moving.

Cashiers are not only responsible for verifying I.D.s, they are trained to look for a specific watermark on bills with denominations of $20 or higher. That’s what the young man was doing when he held your $50 bill up to the light. What gives you the right to insult him?

I’m not much younger than you and am also becoming acquainted with the annoyances of aging. Take my advice: swap your beer and ice cream for a nice glass of prune juice and a fresh bran muffin. You’ll feel better, and so will everyone else!
