I was surprised to see that The Daily Star is allowing climate change deniers to write columns. Chuck Pinkey’s declaration of “the end of global warming” is preposterous and disingenuous. Fact-checkers do help publishers avoid embarrassment. A little investigation into the UK’s Met Office website would make it clear that the “pause” they speak of is chiefly the result of thermal inversions in the Pacific Ocean. Its whole site makes the point over and over again, using a wide variety of scientific evidence, that global warming continues: “There’s a wide range of evidence which indicates our climate is warming.”
So he’s dead wrong on that. Charging Adrian Kuzminski with being “in the forefront of trying to stop every new business endeavor in Otsego County?” Pinkey’s fourth paragraph outlines many Otsego County business opportunities that Kuzminski is actually encouraging — and after that, it is Pinkey himself who dismisses them. Dismiss hops? In the mid-19th century, Otsego and Schoharie counties produced 40 percent of America’s hops. We have plenty of vacant farmland, and dismissing new agricultural initiatives here is pretty close to “trying to stop every new business endeavor in Otsego County.”
So after all this, can we trust his assertion that he met a guy making $82,000 a month for doing nothing? Please. We know the economic impact of hydrofracking on a rural community, and aside from a few lucky landowners, the rest of the community wakes up with a really bad headache.
Sustainability means leaving a whole, healthy, clean and prosperous county for everybody’s children and grandchildren. I’m sorry that Mr. Pinkey doesn’t share that vision.
