Sheriff's department does a good job

In response to Mr. Stavola’s piece titled “Sheriffs should emulate state police”:

As an Otsego County resident, born and raised, I feel our sheriff’s department does an excellent job. Daily I see the presence of the department, whether it be pulling people over, radar monitoring, or even stopping by local schools.

It was stated that the Otsego County Sheriff’s office should enforce the laws as they were intended, like the state police. How were these laws enforced when Cooperstown had a specific concert? There was an odor of marijuana hovering over the village, and I saw alcohol being served or sold to minors. From my understanding, Cooperstown police asked for state police assistance with this event, who were present, but why didn’t they do the moral thing that day?

I understand law enforcement can’t stop everything everywhere; it’s not possible. To say one branch doesn’t morally do its job and another branch does cannot be said.

I have heard of many experiences where the sheriff’s department has handled things respectfully. If Mr. Stavola feels he can do better, I urge him to join the force and make the difference. I think in any job position, if something wasn’t handled in a way that someone wanted it handled, it would cause someone to judge an entire agency on that experience.

As for who is better at enforcing the law, or acting more moral, I would say there is not a contest. Both State Police and Otsego County Sheriff’s Department all do a great job. Without the sheriff’s department, response times in this rural area could be dangerous. I thank all law enforcement for what they do.
