Give Kosmer's planchance to succeed

If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.

I commend Rep. John Kosmer for thinking outside the box and proposing a plan to preserve our county nursing home, The Manor.

Conversely, Rep. James Powers’ outright rejection of this plan is disappointing. His unwillingness even to discuss an attempt to save the county’s only public nursing facility is a disservice to county residents and residents of the Manor, and its employees.

Kosmer’s plan merits discussion – all the more so in that the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) has expressed a willingness to look at the plan.

Why burn bridges in front of us? Given the time limitations involved in implementing the Kosmer proposal, we should follow the advice of our highly qualified county Treasurer Dan Crowell: “to put our foot on the accelerator, to explore these issues quickly.”

Acceptable health care for the elderly is something everyone will have to deal with sooner or later — whether in regard to a parent, spouse, loved one, friend, neighbor or ourselves. The residents of Otsego County deserve to have the best options in this regard.

The gridlock that characterizes Washington, D.C. has proven harmful to the greater good of the country. This way of governing is not acceptable in Otsego County. While Sen. Seward pre-emptively slammed a door by stating, without benefit of public input, that he would not support an increase in sales tax to keep The Manor in the public domain, Gov. Cuomo has indicated he is open to such an initiative, if it is the will of the people.

I realize the decision to privatize The Manor was not taken lightly, but neither is it written in stone. Let’s not dismiss Kosmer’s plan without further consideration and public input.
