We need gas and other fossil fuels
I hope after the elections this fall the gas drilling can begin in our area. I also hope the gas pipeline can be built through our area.
For one thing, we need some more private sector jobs in our area. Recently, on the local evening news, it was reported that 60 percent of the children in the Binghamton school system live in poverty. Sixty percent! I can’t help but worry what this figure will be in 20 years if we don’t have any progress in upstate New York. As for the gas pipeline, Amphenol in Sidney wants the pipeline for the new proposed plant in Sidney. If Amphenol moved out of Sidney it would (not could) be devastating to the local economy.
Our country cannot run without fossil fuels. Coal-fired power plants keep the lights and power on. (Ever notice those long trains full of coal?) Fuel oil, natural gas, and LP gas run our furnaces, heaters, and hot water heaters. Gasoline and diesel run our cars, trucks, buses and most trains. (Some trains run on electricity.) I realize it is important to protect the environment, but there’s always some risk with fossil fuels.
It seems to me that there’s more danger on our nation’s highways than anywhere else, but many people don’t even give that a second thought. Solar and wind power are an option, but we still need fossil fuels, too.
The recent tropical storm Sandy caused millions of people to be without vital supplies of electricity, gas and diesel fuel. Some people will complain about the extraction of natural gas, coal and other fossil fuels, but like it or not, our country cannot function without them.
