Eckelmann deserves a third term|

I would like to recommend the following book: “The Efficiency Trap, Finding a Better Way to Achieve a Sustainable Energy Future,” by Steve Hallett, to elected or appointed government representatives of Otsego County who hold our future in their hands.

While sustainability is the capacity to remain in a steady state, resilience is the capacity to recover from shocks. Resilience is a special kind of strength. It is not the strength to hold back the tide, but the strength to bend without breaking as the tide inevitably rushes in.

Our town’s supervisor, Charlie Eckelmann of Butternuts, understands this and I am proud to be a resident of a town that has an eye on the future and is showing real strength by giving 101 percent like Mr. Eckelmann. Here’s to a third term, Charlie!

There is not much most of us can do to change the trajectory of society, but there is a lot we can do to prepare ourselves for the future, and we can certainly try to have an influence locally. When was the last time you attended a town board meeting? Do you intend to vote this Nov. 5?

If our elected officials and the residents of our beloved state want to be truly business-friendly, energy-independent and protect the resources that make New York and Otsego an attractive place to work and live, they ought to read “The Efficiency Trap” and heed the words of a former governor, Theodore Roosevelt: “Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.”

One more thing: I have been accused of powering my home with expensive fossil fuels. Not so. My power provider is Cooperative of America-renewables, consisting of wind and hydropower.
