The Daily Star
---- — Mrs. Connie Herzig, one of two extraordinary physical education teachers, recently gave two of the best speeches I’ve heard in my life.
That’s a tall stance to take, considering I’ve heard some really great speeches in my 15 years of higher education. My area of expertise is in community and positive psychology, and I teach at the State University College at Oneonta. In my opinion, she got it 100 percent right in every moment of this event.
She hosted a recent third-grade track meet with the help of the teachers, staff and older students. One speech was the opening of the almost three-hour event and the other was at the end.
Through her extraordinary kindness and loving delivery of good sportsmanship, this was one of the best events I’ve seen to date in the Cooperstown Central School. Connie Herzig, with her gentle voice, conveyed the passion for trying, for succeeding in one’s personal best and for excellence in caring about one another.
She stood with open arms for every single child at the finish line along with the other third-grade team. When someone fumbled, they all rallied the entire grade to cheer each other on. I’m dazzled by the amount of love and attention that went into this event and wish that all parents could’ve been there to see the extraordinary amount of quality education our children received.
She made competition fun, but more important than that, she emphasized that every child take ownership of their actions and foster personal growth with a sense of great pride in doing their best. I was thrilled to be a witness to this team of individuals. Thank you, CCS Third Grade Team! This isn’t only a “thank you,” but evidence of outstanding positive teaching in our schools.
