Learning the community comes with the job

The Daily Star

---- — It was nice to talk to people at the Library Meet & Greet last week. I learned how much our community appreciates the welcoming atmosphere and great customer service our staff delivers. I hope to visit community organizations in the coming months to learn which services are most popular and what new services we can provide. If you’re interested in a visit, please contact me at the library.

Don’t forget to support the library by joining the Friends group. If you join before Nov. 1 you’ll be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to the Green Toad Bookstore. Membership forms can be found on the library website or at the Library. The annual meeting will be held just before the Oct. 21 program at 6:30.

People are always surprised at the list of books that have been banned. To increase awareness of banned books, the American Library Association celebrates Banned Book Week every September. To support the theme, the Friends created a display and held a drawing for three banned books. Florette Jaffie won “The Kite Runner,” Cydney E. won “The Glass Castle” and Cheyenne Kline won “Thirteen Reasons Why.” Congratulations and to the winners!

With your library card, you can download free ebooks and audio books to your computer, tablet or smartphone. If you’re already using this service, you’ll be glad to know that you can now renew ebooks. Simply place a hold on any title that you’ve already checked out and if you need more time it will seamlessly allow you to keep the book. If you want to learn how, register for one of our classes by calling or stopping by the library. A series of classes will run from Oct. 28 to Nov. 6. More details are available at the library.

Magic of the Hands and the Mind, will take place at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21. Brian Foley has performed magic professionally for more than 30 years in Europe, for heads of state and for major corporations. His program is an exposition of classical and modern close-up and parlor magic. Cards and coins are the medium of the close-up and the mind is the medium of the parlor magic. Foley will demonstrate and explain these unique processes. Enjoy sophisticated entertainment as well as some absurd humor with Brian Foley, “The Amazing Great.” This performance is intended for an adult audience.

The Scrabble Group will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. You’re invited to join this open group of Scrabble enthusiasts. All ability levels are welcome to attend and there are plenty of Scrabble boards to go around.

Library Hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
