Saying 'thank you' to our library staff

National Library Week is the week of April 13-19 and Tuesday April 15 is National Library Workers Day. The Friends of the Huntington Memorial Library will recognize the hard work, dedication, and expertise of library support staff and librarians this week and encourage library patrons to do the same.

Patrons may stop by the library and sign one of the “thank you” quotes that will be in a basket on the glass display case. Research indicates that the biggest motivator for most employees is receiving praise and knowing that they make a significant contribution to their organization.

National Library Week is the perfect opportunity to tell others how the library has changed your life and to thank the people who have helped. Libraries and the library staff have a powerful and positive impact on the lives of Americans on a daily basis. The Friends would like to thank our library staff for the number of materials selected, acquired, catalogued, checked out, in and shelved, for handling book requests and sending them to other libraries, for answering reference questions, for planning, publicizing and presenting programs, for developing and maintaining the library’s website, for managing the library, for housing local history and genealogy materials, for taking care of the building and grounds and for all of the many services that library workers provide.

The Huntington Memorial Library has a limited budget but serves between 250 and 300 people on an average day. The library’s resources include 27,788 adult books, 87 magazine subscriptions, 5 daily newspapers, 9,875 children’s books, 1,269 DVDs, 1,989 books on CD and four public computers. For many people, the library is their only connection to the internet.

The Friends of the Huntington Memorial Library was formed in 1990. Their mission is to maintain an association of persons interested in strengthening the library, enhancing the collections and promoting its usefulness. The Friends are active in a variety of ways. They donate money that is used to purchase library materials, computers and furniture. They provide programs for adults and support the children’s programs. The Friends also help with deliveries to patrons who can’t get to the library and they promote library activities. This week, the Friends will be supporting library workers by bringing goodies every day and making thank you notes that will be available for patrons to sign. They do good work and you’re invited to join them. Membership forms can be picked up from the library or downloaded from the library website at
