Children's summer programs to begin

The Daily Star

---- — It’s summer time and the Children’s Summer Programs will begin the week of June 24.

There is something for every age, so be sure to make the library part of your weekly schedule. This year’s theme is “Dig Into Reading!” and programs continue through Aug. 24. All programs require registration, which can be done in person or by calling the library at 432-1980. Feel free to call us if you have any questions. Children’s Coordinator, Miss Debra, has lots of fun things planned for everyone.

Pre-readers and Readers can read books or have books read to them all summer long. For every 10 books read, children get to pick a prize from the basket.

For every five books teens (12 to 18 years old) read that are 200 pages or more, a prize is awarded. Choose from one of our many teen novels as well as other prizes.

Non-Fiction Bingo

You can play our Bingo game by reading five non-fiction books as detailed on our bingo cards. When you complete a row across, down or diagonally, and fill out the sheets to tell us about the book, you win a prize.

Library Lap Sit

Lap Sit is a reading program for infants from birth to 13 months accompanied by a parent or care giver. Activities include stories, songs, action rhymes and more. The program is scheduled for Wednesday mornings from 10:30 to 10:50.

Tiny Tots

This is a program for children ages 14 to 24 months accompanied by a parent or care giver scheduled for  9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays. There will be stories, songs and other activities each week.

Toddler Time

This program is for 2- and 3 year-olds accompanied by an adult. It includes stories, songs, crafts and other fun activities. Choose one program from this schedule: 9:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays or Wednesday, or 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

Preschool Storytime

Four- and 5-year-olds meet Tuesdays from 11:15 a.m. to noon. They will enjoy stories, games, songs and crafts each week, along with other activities. Parents may attend.

Reading Club

Each week children will be reading stories, playing games, singing songs and making crafts. Children who are 4 to 7 years old can register for one of these two times: 1:15 to 2 p.m. Tuesdays or 1:15 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays. Parents may attend.

Afternoon Adventures

Afternoon Adventures is for children ages 8 to 12 and meets from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays. To start the summer, the group will be reading “How to Eat Fried Worms” and follow it with a fun activity or craft.

In addition to all these programs, there are weekly contests for the children which include the following:

“Find Charlie the Chipmunk” who is hanging somewhere in the children’s room, in a different place every week. Write down your answer, stick it in the jar, and you could be one of our five weekly winners.

“How Many Gummy Worms?” features a large jar filled with these candies. Can you guess how many are in the jar? If you are the closest guesser, you will win a prize.

“Dig Into Dinosaurs” asks children to look at posters and then identify which dinosaur they saw to answer the question of the week. Five winners will be selected every week.

We’ll be holding a toilet cover coloring contest for ages 1 to 18. Entries are due by July 26 and entry forms will be available in the children’s room and at the front desk.

“Jen and Sam Reed” are brother and sister, and they always travel around New York state every summer with their family. This summer they will be visiting many areas in the state and will learn about many famous authors who live here. Read their story every week and use the posters to figure out which author they learned about. Five winners will be chosen every week.

Library Hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
