Welcome to the Download Zone

The Daily Star

---- — Huntington Memorial Library and all the libraries in the Four County Library System provide free access to electronic books and audio books. Called the Download Zone, you access the materials using your library card number, computer and/or device. Introduced in 2011, usage is growing by leaps and bounds now that more and more people are obtaining e-readers. You can enjoy an e-book at home or on the go. You’ll also never have to worry about returning the material since it disappears from your device at midnight on the day it is due. No fines to worry about with these materials.

OverDrive has just announced new ways to read e-books from your Internet Browser. This option is called OverDrive Read. All you have to do to read an e-book is to go to the Download Zone site at, check out a book and choose the Read in Browser option. As long as you have a device that can browse the Internet, you can choose this option. Unlike Adobe Digital Editions, no authorization of the software or device is required. This includes computers, tablets and smartphones.

Also, there are now many e-readers that have the ability to use apps. If you go to your app store and download the OverDrive Media Console App, you can easily check out library e-books using the app. Or, for those of you who prefer to use a basic e-reader dedicated to just reading, you just download your checked out books from the Download Zone and use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer the books to your device while connected to your computer. Adobe Digital Editions Software is needed on your computer for this to work. Once it is installed, you can easily read e-books on your computer or transfer them to your e-reader. The OverDrive App is also available for your smartphone, tablet or app-capable device.

For those of you who like to listen to books, we also offer audiobooks for download. These can also be played through software on your computer or from an app on your device. The software and the app have the same name – OverDrive Media Console.

At the library, we have many brochures available to help you get started. The Download Zone also has help guides. If you need personal instruction, Sarah Livingston is available to help you with one-on-one instruction. Look for our e-book and audiobook classes to be announced next week.

Isn’t is amazing how quickly technology is changing? Do you think someday we’ll have chips implanted in our brains that will be able to automatically download books for us to enjoy without need of any device? It’s possible in many science fiction books, and so many older works of science fiction are now part of our daily living.

“The Complete Guide to Plumbing” will help you when the toilet runs, the sink leaks, drains clog and more. Almost any plumbing problem can be tackled using this book. Detailed instructions and hints are included with diagrams and photos to make things clear.

Take a few days to visit Niagara Falls or Toronto with the help of “Fodor’s Toronto.” Attractions, accommodations, top restaurants and more will help you quickly fill in your itinerary.

Erica Brown talks about the meaning of life and death in “Happier Endings.” She has suggestions on how to live life to its fullest all the while understanding that we will not live forever. Erica also talks about making important end of life decisions for ourselves and loved ones along with many other topics that have impact on our lives and those of others. Stories from many different people are included.
