Consuming a steady diet of books

We use metaphors for all sorts of things in our life and reading is no different. There are some fun expressions that link reading and eating. Can you think of any others?

• hungry for a good book

• voracious reader

• devour a book

• hungry for knowledge

• stuff your mind with rich food

• Thanksgiving dinner for your head

• lap up a good book

• thirsty for knowledge

• consume a book

• nourished by the story

• words are food and I eat them hungrily

And in the words of A.J. Jacobs, who wrote “The Know-It-All,” when reading, he will “unbutton the pants around my brain and let out my cerebral cortex a little.”

Farewell Reception

From the library Board of Trustees:

“The Board of Trustees of Huntington Memorial Library cordially invites you to a reception for retiring Director Marie Bruni. Join us on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Huntington Memorial Library, in the third floor meeting room. Share memories and say goodbye to Marie as she goes ‘On to the next chapter ...’ ”

Light refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Friends of Huntington Memorial Library, and everyone is welcome.

Summer Reading

Simple, inexpensive ideas will help you spruce up your home in “Quick Changes.” An old lamp is given new life with a modern lampshade. An all while living room is quick perky with the addition of brightly colored accessories. Simply changing the arrangement of a room or repurposing a piece of furniture can completely enliven a room. You’ll find lots of ideas in this book.

Murder at the Castle” by Jeanne Dams finds retired Chief Constable Alan Nesbitt and his wife Dorothy Martin invited to a Welsh music festival with their friends Nigel and Inga Evans. Nigel will be performing with many noted musicians. When an accident kills one of the choir members and the star soloist, Nigel and Dorothy are caught up in the investigation — not what they had originally planned for their outing.
