Catskills' fly-tying 'Dean' to display flies at library

The Huntington Memorial Library is fortunate to have Dave Brandt, master fly-tyer, display his work during the month of May. Stop by to see his famous, traditional Catskill dry flies. In the Spring 2009 issue of Fly Tyer magazine, an article featuring Dave called him the “Dean of Modern Catskill Fly Tyers.” In 2007, Dave was the second of 100 world’s best fly tyers listed in a five-book series call Flytyers of the World.

He was also instrumental in establishing the Upper Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited. In 2010 the members renamed the organization the Dave Brandt Chapter of Trout Unlimited to recognize his many contributions locally as well as world-wide.

With hundreds of different fly patterns in existence, Dave will display a wide range of flies. We live in an area that offers abundant natural resources so if you want to learn about fly fishing there are many resources such as area organizations and books at your library. On May 19 we’ll have a special Catskill Fly Fishing program hosted by Dave Brandt, so mark your calendars now.

A Preservation Week Open House will take place from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Preservation Week runs from April 27 to May 3 this year. To celebrate our heritage, the library is offering classes on genealogy and Internet resources for genealogists (check our website for dates and times) and an open house for people wishing to learn more about best practices for personal digital archives. Photo albums, letters, home movies and paper documents are a vital link to the past, but personal information we create today is more often “born digital.” Preserving digital information is a new concept that most people have less experience with. To help cross the divide between print and digital materials, the library is offering the open house for you to ask questions and get resources for digital archiving from our library archivist Sarah Livingston. She’ll be ready to answer your questions and will provide a tip sheet for best practices.
