Library to host program on photographer

Noted photographer Carleton Watkins was born in Oneonta on Nov. 11, 1829. He moved to California during the gold rush and traveled with another Oneontan, Collis Huntington. Watkins developed an interest in photography while working at a portrait studio. He then became interested in landscape photography and is remembered for his photographs of Yosemite Valley taken in the 1860s. These photos helped influence Congress to make the area a National Park in 1864 to preserve it.

Watkins was known for his “Mammoth Camera” and it is believed he created the largest body of work in photography of anyone of his generation, approximately 10,000 photographs in all.

Weston Naef, founding curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, is co-author with Christine Hult-Lewis of “Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Photographs,” which took more than 20 years to compile. He has generously donated a copy of this book to the New York State room at the library. The book was awarded the Kraszna-Krausz prize for best photography book of 2011.

Naef will present “Carleton Watkins Photographer: The Forgotten Genius of Oneonta,” at Huntington Memorial Library from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. He will discuss Watkins and his work. This program is free and open to the public.
