In the 1950s, it was sock hops and malt shops.
In the '70s and '80s, teens gathered at rollerskating rinks. In my teenage years, it was hanging out, listening to music, watching television, and going to malls _ OK, the Southside Mall, the only one around.
But, what interests teens today?
The Internet is huge, with social-networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook drawing teens in droves.
Are academic and religious persuits growing among the teenage population?
What about outdoor activities _ camping, hiking, biking, skating _ are they popular?
What else do teens like to do?
I would like to know.
That's why I need you, teens, to tell me "" and The Daily Star readers "" what interests teens today.
We are looking for a teen writer for our "On the Go" column. If you enjoy writing and would like to write a column every four weeks, I want to hear from you.
You can submit a sample column of 600 to 800 words on an activity that interests teens today.
Along with the column, include your name, age, hometown, grade, school and a phone number where we can reach you.
Samples can be sent by e-mail to dziemba@thedailystar.com, by fax to (607) 432-5707, or by mail, attention to Denielle Ziemba, to The Daily Star, P.O. Box 250, Oneonta, NY 13820.
If you have any questions, give me a call at (800) 721-1000, ext. 259.
Best yet, if you are chosen to be a writer for us, you'll get paid.
OK, so it's not millions, but it'll be enough to put some gas into your tank or to buy you and a couple of friends lunch at a fast-food joint.
So, teens, get writing. I'll need your samples by Thursday, July 24.
Denielle Ziemba is Lifestyle editor of The Daily Star.
